As part of the 2012 London Olympics, we were commissioned to design Plot N10 of the Athletes’ Village. This provided the accommodation for incoming Olympic athletes in the first instance, and was then adapted to provide a mix of market and affordable tenure residential apartments and townhouses with complementary retail use.
Working within the constraints of the masterplanning brief, our design response included the careful study of the façades, giving them animation, depth and solidity, almost as a prolongation and space of transition to the domestic interior. This is especially the case of our treatment of the generous balconies, which is further enhanced by the strong colours of the paintings by Eric Parry.
As an urban block, the buildings enclose a large landscaped garden, whose light, green and treetops are in constant dialogue with the architecture. Now popularly known as East Village, this thriving new place in London houses a growing active community.
